解除職務的麥帥，於1951年4月19日，應邀出席國會作證，一反他沉默的態度，在國會中侃侃而談，沉重地說出他對韓戰的看法，及提出他解決韓戰的看法。這次演講贏得滿場無數的掌聲與不時的唏噓，尤其當他說出一句源於一首早年最流行的軍歌歌詞以自況：「老兵不死，只是逐漸凋零。Old soldiers never die, They only fade away.」作為結語時，豪氣絲毫不減，多少人不禁為之潸然淚下！他的從軍生涯已告結束，真像軍營中的老兵一樣，將消失於茫茫人海中。
